My kingdom for a dishwasher

March 7, 2007

Growing up, we had neither dishwasher nor microwave. My mom used to say that it wasn’t natural for food to be cooked so quickly (hence, no microwave) while my dad used to ponder, “Why would we need to buy a dishwasher when we have to perfectly good ones called April and Fiona?” This, despite the fact that we rarely did the washing up and NEVER did it of our own free will.

At any rate, having a functioning dishwasher in Toronto really opened my eyes to the wonders of this magical appliance. Leaving it was hard, but I thought that it was a love that could easily be replaced.

While our new house is great, it does lack a dishwasher. I know one day I will visit an appliance store and will find love again, but in the meantime there is a hole in my heart that can only be filled by a giant pile of dirty dishes on the counter beside the sink. Needless to say, with Todd’s arrival my housework has suffered somewhat… call it the puppy knock-on effect.

On the bright side, we do have a microwave although it is from the 80s and therefore does not cook food unnaturally rapidly.

If you know of a good dishwasher that likes long walks on the beach, candlelit dinners and meeting new people, would you be so kind as to give it our number?

Mark#41 – Sudo-Q Superstars

March 2, 2007

A few weeks ago, I told you I am gonna be on TV. Specifically, me and my pal Gooders went down to London to appear on BBC 2 quiz show ‘Sudo-Q’, and we actually did pretty well.

We won 5 consecutive episodes, which is the most you are allowed to win before they make you retire undefeated, were crowned the series champions, and won a few thousand quid. To find out exactly how much money we won, and to see just how well we performed (and what complete idiots we made of ourselves in the process), you will just have to watch the show.

Our first episode is on Friday, March 16th, commencing at 3:15pm on BBC2. The next four episodes are shown Monday through Thursday the following week, at the same 3:15pm time slot.

Gooders and I will likely be organising some kind of a big-screen viewing session for our pals, so watch this space for details.

Mark#30 – Some Wedding Snaps

December 20, 2006

It was a GREAT day…

Mark#29 – 5 Things Meme

December 19, 2006

My pal Leona has hit me with the ‘5 things you don’t know about me’ meme. This means I’m now obliged to tell you 5 random things about myself that you hopefully didn’t already know about me, and hopefully find worth knowing.

Here goes…

1) I can fit my entire fist in my mouth.

2) A confession: I once let my brother get in trouble with the police for smashing a window that I actually smashed (to this day I don’t think Andy knew I was behind it…I was going to save that one for my best man speech at his wedding next year, but whatever, I have more than enough ammo for that!).

3) One of my biggest ambitions is to write a screenplay despite a comprehensive lack of screenplay-writing knowledge.

4) I used to be in Oldham Theatre Workshop and appeared on stage in ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ and in an episode of Emmerdale Farm. My budding acting career was prematurely ended when I was booted out due to misbehaviour that was wrongly attributed to me (this could be karma for the window-smashing incident).

5) My favourite TV programmes include: Homes Under the Hammer; Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares; Lost; 24; So You Think You Can Dance.

April, Goooooders and Pete, it’s now on you to continue the ‘5 things…’ fun.

Mark#27 – Jake is Drunk

December 9, 2006

It’s late on Saturday night. April is in Paris so I’m enjoying a drunken night with the guys. Unfortunately, on these drunken nights, guys tend to say things they shouldn’t.

My pal Jake, who is perhaps the most drunk of all the drunken guys, has just informed us that he thinks his girlfriend, Claire, reminds him of a character from Star Wars, though he neglected to tell us which character he has in mind. I’m sure Claire will be livid when she reads this, and I’m sure Jake will call me begging to take this post down…but it’s just too damn funny.

So, in the meantime, would anybody care to guess which character Jake might think Claire looks like?

Mark#24 – Wedding Photos Update

November 21, 2006

Apologies folks, I tried to upload some photos to the blog this weekend but my new laptop keeps giving me an error message whenever I try to publish a post that has pictures in it. Probably just a setting that I need to activate (or deactivate) somewhere I guess, but I haven’t bothered to investigate yet.

Anyway, worry not because our wedding photographer is, as I type this, creating an online album of 300 photos from the big day for us. It should be available this week, but I gave him a few editing notes so I guess it’ll depend how long it takes him to fix some of the shots up.

I’ll post the link and login details on the blog as soon as we get them, unless we decide to be a bit more private with them, in which case I’ll email the info to each and every one of you.

We celebrated the birthday of two of our friends, Jake and Luke, this weekend and everybody ended up drunk and back at our house. The wedding photos got their first en masse public viewing anyway, and the concensus was that the photographer has done an excellent job, so hopefully you’ll all like what you see.

So now I just need to track down our honeymoon photos (no idea what I’ve done with them) and then I’ll make an online album for them too.

In other news, I had a great weekend because: a) Everton beat high-flying Bolton 1-0 b) Liverpool only managed to scrape a draw against lowly Middlesbrough c) I watched UFC 65 d) I had the tastiest curry of my life e) The team I play for, The Turks Head, won NINE-NIL, f) We booked a trip to Egypt in February and, g) Season 3 of Lost got off to a very promising start.

I also just found out that the office of my client shuts down for two weeks at Christmas, which means I also get to shut down for two weeks. And my client is taking me out to Spain for a few days in January (part work, part play).

Woo hoo!

Mark#23 – Hurry Up Bongo, We’re Starving!!

November 17, 2006

I’m sitting on the couch. Laptop on my lap. Beer in my hand. Bloggin’ on t’Internet.

April is sitting on the couch. Purse on her lap. TV remote in her hand. Watching Britain’s Next Top Model.

Eric is sitting on the ottoman. Hands on his lap. Nothing in his hand. Also, watching Britain’s Next Top Model.

Bongo is driving back from Preston. Nothing on his lap. Steering wheel in his hands (hopefully). Watching the road and talking to his pal, Tanya.

When Bongo and Tanya arrive we’re all heading out to the Blue Diamond for a chinky. Hurry up Bongo, we’re starving!

I’m thinking about what I’m going to order. I guess it’ll go something like this: Seaweed. Crispy duck pancakes with hoisin sauce. Salt and pepper king prawns with fried rice and plain fried noodles. April will share the appetizers and no doubt order deep fried crispy chicken in O.K. sauce.
