Mark#35 – Puppy Update

When our friends and lodgers, Eric and Brian, leave us to move into their swanky new apartment in Manchester’s Northern Quarter next month, we will finally have the requisite space to bring a pooch into our hearts, home and family.

And, further to THIS POST from last year, April and I have now agreed on a breed.

We are hoping to get a flat-coated retriever, a relatively uncommon breed of retriever (compared to the labrador or the golden varieties) but one which is still what I call a ‘man-dog’ and that is supposedly fairly intelligent and easy to train. Most importantly, they are very tolerant of children and other pets, which is great because we want babies and we already have cats.

Not surprisingly, there are only a few breeders in the country, so now the key is to find a reputable breeder who is expecting a litter in the near future. Fortunately I have made contact with the breed club secretary and she is putting the feelers out ther for us. So, with a bit of luck, it might only be a couple of months until we have another mouth to feed (and poo to clean up).

    sounds good.
But will it have patch’s winnets?

  2. markandapril says:

    Aww, poor Patch!

Actually, you just reminded me about something. We have also come close to deciding a name. Originally I was campaigning for ‘Scraps’ or ‘Mr. Scraps’, but April is insisting that all our pets have human names.

Surely Mr. Scraps is a legitimate human name, I retort, but alas it will not fly.

So now we’re leaning towards ‘Todd’. ‘Todd the dog’. ‘Come here Toddy’. ‘Todd, fetch your stick’.

Unless we end up with a bitch, in which case it’s back to the drawing board.

  3. gooders says:

“scraps” is too much effort. Your tongue and lips have to do a lot of work to pronounce that name. Todd is phonetically pleasing but makes me think of toady from neighbours, and that’s not good. How about Teddy? Nah, too soft. I dare you to call him Toto. that would suck. It would be hilarious to call him Eric don’t you think?

  4. markandapril says:

Ha ha, we totally thought about calling him Eric or Brian. We considered Brian more seriously because it would be like naming him after the dog in Family Guy (one of our fave shows).

But why does Todd make you think of Toady from Neighbours? Surely if it going to make you think of anyone from Neighbours, it should be Todd Landers???

  5. gooders says:

I’m just not familiar with that guy. And it may have been the “toddy” that did it rather than the “todd”.

  6. Bongo says:

Human names how about Adolf, Imran, Mohammed?

  7. markandapril says:

Are you naming cricketers or terrorists there?

  8. Luke says:

Call the little fella Jake. That will bring about some amusing/unfortunate misunderstandings…..”Jake is always humping my leg” , “Jake has crapped on the carpet again” , “I’ve just caught Jake mounting next doors dog” , “Jake’s breath smells like dog food” etc. Actually all these phrases have been used many times before!

  9. markandapril says:

Ha ha – “Stop dragging your ass on the carpet Jake!”. Nice one Simpson!
